Japanese Tomato Orange Salad

This is such a cute and simple salad. Using gelatin, you set fresh tomato and slices of orange together for a quick prep Japanese salad.

  • 3-4 tomatoes
  • 1 orange
  • Pepper to taste

For the dressing

  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp dashi
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • orange juice retained
  • 2 tsp powdered gelatin
  • Lemon juice


  • Peel the tomatoes and cut them into eight pieces.
  • Peel the orange then gently pull into individual segments. Peel each segment and retain any escaping juice. Place in a bowl with the tomatoes.
  • Mix the mirin, vinegar, dashi, oil and juice and heat in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds to one minute.
  • Add gelatin and mix well until it completely dissolves.
  • Add a splash or two of lemon juice.
  • Add 200ml water and mix.
  • Pour the dressing over the tomatoes and oranges. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
  • Cover and place in the fridge until salad has cooled and the gelatin sets.
