I can’t believe as an Aussie this is the first time I’ve ever made cob loaf!! It was so easy. I did a couple of changes… and added a little bacon cos bacon makes everything better 😂
So easy and so delicious.

Why We Love This
There’s nothing better than a cob loaf dip served up at a BBQ! This is a classic Aussie tradition that our friends and family absolutely love!
The dips are so moreish and guaranteed to disappear almost the instant they hit the table. Plus, once the dip is gone, you can tear or slice up the bread roll into portions and polish off the lot.
Use the recipes below as a guide, but don’t be afraid to experiment – each one is super easy and adaptable. If you know you’re feeding a crowd, you might even like to make a double batch.

What are Cob Loaf Dips?
Cob loaf dips are exactly that + a creamy dip served up in a round, hollowed out bread loaf. Sometimes called a bread bowl, they can be served warm or cold depending on the recipe and season. They’re served up with the fluffy insides of the bread torn up into chunks and scattered around the outside, ready for dipping.
You’ll often see a cob loaf on the table at Aussie gatherings such as birthday parties, picnics, long weekend / public holidays or at Christmas. No matter the occasion, they’re always a huge hit!
Wandercook’s Tips
- Serving – For the freshest results, pop your dip into the bread just before serving. You can make the fillings the day before to save on time and reheat when you need.
- Leftovers – Any leftovers (doubt there will be!) won’t keep well, as the dips soak into the bread over time and become increasingly soggy. Best enjoyed fresh!
- Need another dip? Make a quick mushroom pate to serve it up along side for any extra bread!
Storage, Freezing & Reheating
If you need to transport the dip, you can cover the loaf and a sheet of aluminium foil to keep everything fresh on arrival. Store leftovers in the fridge for a day or so in an airtight container. We don’t recommend freezing them. You can easily reheat a baked cob loaf in the microwave for a few minutes to warm it up, or in the oven to make the bread extra crispy.
FAQs
Most cob loaf recipes can be served hot or cold depending on your preference (although some are best served hot, like those with cheese). Cold dips works best in summer, whereas a warm cob loaf dip straight out of the oven is guaranteed to warm you up on a wintery night!
We love serving them with extra baguette slices, extra crackers or corn chips, or fresh veggie slices such as cucumber, carrot and celery sticks for dipping.
Slice the empty loaf into pieces and share them around! There’ll be just enough dip left on the inside surface for them to be just as delicious.
